The DCFA, in acknowledgement of the existential crisis that the planet currently faces, with the risk it poses to communities locally and globally, humans and all organisms and ecosystems on earth, declared a climate emergency on 22nd February 2021. In doing so, DCFA members made the commitment to support the DCFA Climate Emergency Action Committee to:
1. advocate for opportunites for teaching, learning, and research at the college that address the climate emergency.
2. advocate for Douglas College to also declare a climate emergency.
3. advocate for Douglas College to sign the SDGaccord, with its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.
4. advocate for Douglas College to move towards best practices in reducing our GHG emissions beyond our current legislated carbon neutral status. to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
5. advocate for Douglas College to move towards best practices in maintaining sustainable facilities and services.
At this time, the DCFA also signed the SDG Accord, in the spirit of this declaration, and in acknowledgement of our crucial responsibility to our students and future generations.
On 28th April, 2021, the DCFA voted to sign a petition calling on Douglas College to sign the “Global Climate Letter for Universities and Colleges” prior to COP26 (UN Climate Change Conference or ‘Conference of the Parties”), which will be held in November 2021 in Glasgow. As asserted by the Executive Director of UN Environment, “What we teach shapes the future” The petition, which can be signed by individuals: students, staff, and faculty, can be found here.
